Very exciting and feeling all official! Tonight was the first tutor meeting for the Foundations group. The Foundations Director and the Apprentice tutor are wonderfully organized and prepared, and I’m feeling more confident with this venture.

We are going to have a number of meetings to try to plan 6 weeks at a time, so we aren’t scrambling each week. The Apprentice tutor has a number of wonderful ideas already.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  • Most importantly, tutors are not teachers – the parents are. Tutors are presenting information, and modeling ways to memorize it. We are equipping the parents.
  • The day is broken into five 30-minute parts (not necessarily in order)
    • New grammar (which takes the most preparation time)
    • Review old grammar – the Abecedarian group should be able to review at least 6 weeks of grammar
    • Science experiments and science project
      • 6 weeks from Janice Van Cleaves 201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre and Incredible Experiments
      • 6 weeks where they will create an outline of their body and learn their organs/systems inside of it
      • 6 weeks from Janice Van Cleaves 201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre and Incredible Experiments
      • 6 weeks on probability
    • Fine arts
      • 6 weeks drawing
      • 6 weeks tin whistle (start praying for us all now)
      • 6 weeks masters
      • 6 weeks orchestra
    • Presentations
  • I need a rolling cart
  • I need a good mileage tracker for my Droid. I can also write off the curriculum purchases since I use them for tutoring!
